For most people, 2020 will be remembered as a year of change. We changed the way we work, shop, travel and interact.  We noticed that clumping people, functions, almost anything too close together can be detrimental. A centralized system offers any virus (biological or digital) an easy target. The remedy to this is decentralization.  Working from home is nothing but a decentralized office. Ordering food is a decentralized restaurant. Zoom is a decentralized meeting room.

This trend is possible, because of new and digital technology. Digital is the glue that “holds the office together” when we work from home. “Digital” connects the kitchen of the restaurant to your table at home, when you order food from your mobile phone. Digital is the key to decentralization.

The safest way to communicate digitally today is through the blockchain. 

On the “regular internet” people can publish fake information or even lie. A product you order online might actually turn out to be fake. This is because the regular internet is built on “trust”. You “trust” that the product you ordered online is real. You “trust” that the room you rented exists. But sometimes, this “blind trust” doesn’t live up to what you hoped for: it turns out you’d been tricked. On the blockchain, lies don’t work! Cheating is simply impossible on the blockchain. The blockchain is based on a strict and immutable law: “Don’t trust – verify”.

Verification is much more reliable than trust.  That’s why 2020 is becoming the year of decentralized finance.

Decentralized finance means that you do not need a bank to give you “centralized trust”. Instead of the bank, decentralized finance uses the transparency of the blockchain to verify every step, usually taken by a bank to offer “trusted transactions”.

> Person “A” can ask “everybody” on the blockchain to “give him/her a loan”. 

> Everybody on the blockchain sees (and verifies) that person “B” agrees to do so.

> Everybody is aware of (and verifies) the transaction when the money flows from “B” to “A”.

> Everybody sees and verifies when the loan is paid back.

Who is “everybody”? Well in the case of blockchain, millions and millions of computers all over the world. If you want to steal that money, you can’t simply break into just one safe of a centralized bank. You would need to be able break into millions and millions of decentralized safes all over the world – at the same time! This is decentralized finance.
